The talking drum also known as “Ilu Gangan” is a unique hourglass-shaped drum from the Yoruba tribe of Nigeria, West Africa. Played with a curved drumstick, the talking drum's pitch can be regulated to mimic the tone and patterns of human speech. It has two drumheads connected by leather tension cords, which allow the player to change the pitch of the drum by squeezing the cords between their arm and body. Most talking drums sound like a human humming depending on the way they are played, and a skilled player is able to play whole phrases.

Talking drums are one of the oldest African musical instruments. In Yoruba land, “Ayan” which means drummer is a prefix of many Yoruba names used to signify the bearer as a custodian of the talking drum tradition. Coined after the first Yoruba drummer Ayangalu, who is now known as the patron spirit of all drummers. Popular in various music production systems and used in almost every west African ceremonial function like festivals, weddings, burial ceremonies, etc.
